Bangladesh must elect a new president within 90 days following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin, the country’s 22nd president.
Under the Constitution, the speaker of the National Parliament will serve as acting president until a successor takes office. The Election Commission will approve and publish a schedule covering nominations, scrutiny, withdrawals and, if necessary, voting.
The chief election commissioner will serve as returning officer.
A candidate must be a Bangladeshi citizen, at least 35 years old and qualified to be elected to Parliament. Each nomination must be proposed by one member of Parliament and seconded by another.
Bangladesh does not elect its president by popular vote. Only elected members of Parliament may participate.
If multiple candidates remain, lawmakers will vote by secret ballot. The candidate receiving a majority of valid votes cast will win. If only one candidate remains, that person will be declared elected unopposed.
