Bangladesh has formally asked India to return former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising, a government official said Monday.
State minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam said Bangladesh sent the request through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and included a copy of the International Crimes Tribunal verdict. She said separate letters were also sent seeking the return of others who fled to India.
“We have sent a letter to India seeking the return of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Separate letters have been sent seeking the return of those who have fled to India,” she told reporters.
Obaed spoke after a seminar in Dhaka marking three decades of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, where she reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to regional cooperation, trade, connectivity and investment.
